The Red Cross What WWhy do so many psychiatrists and psychologists dislike working with people with borderline personality disorder (emotionally unstable personality disorder)?

I think it’s because a borderline keeps seeking love, affection, validation from people who can/ will never give it to them. They want a sense of family from their therapist. They want a best friend of their nurse. They want a father or mother figure from their doctor and when it can’t be like that, they punish by hurting themselves or creating a story where the healthcare workers are the bad guys and the borderline is the victim.

This is especially hard for some health care workers who just want to care for people and help them get better. It is hard to set boundaries that feel cruel to people, but borderline clients will find a hard time improving unless they build a circle of supportive relationships with people in a position to offer them some of what they need.

I do know, though, that borderline PD is the most stigmatized diagnosis in mental health. It’s not fair at all, these behaviors are hallmark of their illness. They deserve compassion and respect because even if they never improve, they are worthwhile individuals who have a lot to give and so many barriers in their way that are not their fault. Most borderline PD patients have extensive trauma histories. This is why forming healthy relationships is so difficult for them in the first place.e Do: The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need.
