Graphic design – also known as visual communication – has had a long history of adapting to the technological world in which we live. From text-based designs to online digital experiences, the requirements to bring graphics and design to life have changed tremendously in the past few decades. However, with the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, a new wave of artificial creativity may be on the horizon.
Generative AI is a type of software that can independently create complex and potentially unique graphic designs. It works from a set of inputs provided by the user by learning from past examples both human-generated and machine-generated. This form of AI helps to reduce the amount of manual labor designers have traditionally had to put into graphic design tasks, and has the potential to shake up the industry in more creative ways than could ever have been imagined.
So, what will generative AI actually mean for the future of graphic design?
First, it will enable machines to learn from human behavior and replicate design elements on-demand with great speed and responsiveness. Even if preceded by human intervention, generative AI will help reduce both complexity and risk when producing content — especially when dealing with vast stores of data such as weather or population statistics which can be quickly integrated into graphical form. Secondly, generative AI may potentially eliminate the need for traditional graphic designers altogether when commissioning projects — though this prediction is at least a few years away yet. In this way, generative AI may make it easier for anyone to assemble an attractive or powerful visual representation on their own. Finally, there are exciting possibilities for "creative collaborations” between developers and graphic designers thanks to machine learning algorithms GANs (generatively adversarial networks).
No matter what AI does or doesn't change in graphics and design, one thing remains true: Designers are still needed for experienced styling input and suggestions throughout a project, as well as helping clients adapt to emerging trends. As long as there are people who require unique graphic designs tailored to their tastes, human beings will still sit at the top of graphic design admiration – with or without AI's help!
